Customize Your Website's Favicon

Learn how to personalize your website's favicon, the small icon that appears in browser tabs and search results, by using a default option or uploading your own custom image.

Written by Mark

A favicon is the small icon that appears in your web browser's tab, next to your site's name in bookmarks, and sometimes in search engine results. Customizing your favicon helps reinforce your brand identity and makes your website easily recognizable to visitors.

Understanding Favicons

Favicons play a crucial role in brand recognition and user experience. They provide a visual cue for your website, making it stand out in a user's browser tabs among many others. A well-designed favicon contributes to a professional online presence and helps users quickly identify your site.

Accessing Favicon Settings

  1. From your Durable dashboard, click Website in the left-hand navigation menu.

  2. Click the Settings (gear) icon located in the top right corner of your website preview. This will open the Site settings modal.

  3. In the left sidebar of the Site settings modal, click Favicon.

Choosing a Default Favicon

By default, Durable automatically generates a favicon for all sites based on your business initials.

  1. In the Favicon settings, you'll see the Use default option with "Generated from your business initials" displayed.

  2. The Favicon preview shows how this default favicon appears.

Uploading a Custom Favicon

For a unique brand representation, you can upload your own custom image as a favicon.

  1. In the Favicon settings, select the Upload your own option.

  2. Click the Upload button (or Replace if you've previously uploaded one) to open your device's file browser.

  3. Navigate to and select your desired image file from your computer.

  4. The Favicon preview will update to show your uploaded image.

  5. If you need to change it, click Replace and select a new file.

Tip: For best results, use a square image file. Recommended formats are PNG, SVG, or ICO. Ensure your image file size is 1 MB or less.

Saving Your Favicon Changes

  1. After selecting your preferred favicon (either default or custom), click the Save button at the bottom of the Site settings modal.

  2. Your website's favicon will update immediately within the Durable editor and on your live site.

Favicon Visibility and Google Search Results

While Durable updates your favicon instantly across your website, it's important to note that search engines like Google operate on their own caching schedules. This means it may take several days for your new favicon to appear in Google search results or other cached locations.

This delay is normal behavior for search engines and does not indicate an issue with your Durable website or the favicon update process.

What's next

With your favicon customized, your website now has a stronger brand identity. Continue exploring the Site settings to personalize other aspects of your website's appearance and functionality.
