An item is what you sell through your website. Start with its type and details, complete the options relevant to that item, then save a draft or list it for sale.
Start a new item
If you plan to ship physical or made-to-order items, set up your shipping rates first so they’re ready when you configure delivery. You can skip this for digital downloads, services or pickup-only items.
From your Durable dashboard, select Sell in the left sidebar.
Select the Items tab at the top of the Sell page, then click + New item.
Choose an item type
See our video, that covers the item types and provides an example for their use:
On What type of item do you want to create?, choose the option that matches what you’re selling:
Physical product: Goods you ship or hand off yourself, like handmade crafts, apparel, or electronics.
Made-to-order: Items created after a customer places an order, such as custom artwork or personalized gifts.
Digital download: Digital items are files customers can download after purchase, such as PDF guides, workbooks, checklists or templates.
Service package: A service or package clients pay for, such as consultations, workshops, or beauty treatments.
Membership fee: A payment collected as a membership fee.
Pre-order for pickup: Items ordered in advance and collected by the customer at a specified location.
Other: Flexible options for items that don't fit standard categories, allowing you to define your own fulfillment method.
If you mostly sell one type, you can select Set 'Physical product' as default, or the equivalent checkbox for your chosen type, to preselect it next time. Click Next to continue.
Sell does not currently offer inventory management or stock tracking.
Add item details
Help customers understand what they’re buying before they place an order. Use the description to explain what’s included, and choose images that show the item or give a useful preview of your service or download.
In the Item name field, enter the name of your item, such as Custom-designed T-shirt or PDF: Home maintenance checklist.
In the Description field, describe your item, or click Generate to have Durable write a description for you. To refine the text, highlight it and click Make Longer, Make Shorter, More casual, or More professional.
Enter the Price for your item, such as $25.00 or $9.99. To add a sale price, click + beside Price, select Sale price, and enter the amount.
To add images, click Add images and choose files, drag and drop them into the area, or use share link. You can add up to 10 images.
To change the item type later, pick a different option from the Item type dropdown.
Add a file for a digital download
For a Digital download, click Upload file and choose the file your customers receive. After checkout, they get a secure download link on the order confirmation page and in their receipt email. Download links expire after 7 days.
Skip this step for other item types.
Choose delivery options
If your item has a Delivery option, choose Shipping only, Pickup only, or Shipping or pickup, depending on what you offer.
For items you ship, review the available Shipping rates. To add or change a rate, or set a pickup address, follow Set up shipping rates.
Add custom questions if needed
Collect the details you need before starting an order, such as engraving text, a color choice or a preferred date. Ask only for information that helps you fulfill the purchase, so customers have a clear, manageable set of questions to answer.
In the item panel, click + Questions to ask customer.
In the Custom question panel, enter the Question label, such as Handle type or Engraving text.
Select the Type of input for the answer:
One line: For short text answers.
Multiple lines: For longer text answers.
Dropdown: For a list of predefined choices.
Checkboxes: For multiple selections.
Radio buttons: For a single selection from a list.
Date: For selecting a specific date.
For Dropdown, Checkboxes, or Radio buttons, enter each choice in an Option label field under Options. Click + Add option for additional choices.
If the question requires an answer before purchase, turn on Required. Customers must answer it before they can add the item to their cart.
Click Save. The question appears under Questions to ask customer in the item panel.
To add another question, click + Add a question and repeat the steps.
Customers' answers appear in each order's details and in your new sale email.
Question examples
Collect a preferred date: Add a Date question to a service-package item. This collects a preference; it does not reserve an appointment. Use Bookings when customers need to choose an available appointment time.
Collect customization details: For a personalized mug, use a One line question for engraving text and Radio buttons for the mug color. These questions collect the customer's choices; they do not manage stock.
List your item
Once you've entered the details, click Save draft to save your progress, or List when the item is ready. Listing changes its status to Listed.
When you list your first item, click Add Items page in the Add an Items page to your website? prompt. This adds an all-items section to your homepage. An individual item page also appears in the website editor’s page selection menu.
Review the all-items section on your homepage. You can also add this section to another ordinary website page. For more, follow Manage your online storefront.
Check your public website to confirm visitors can find the item and see the correct details.
Listing an item is separate from enabling payments. Customers may see your items and add them to their cart but still see Checkout coming soon when they check out. If this happens, check payment activation. See How to Enable Payments in Durable. For payment costs, see Payment Methods and Processing Fees.
Manage your items
Keep your offerings up to date as your business changes: edit an existing item, unlist something you no longer want to offer, or duplicate a similar item as a starting point. Find your items in the Items tab at the top of the Sell page, where you can check each item’s listing status, price, type and last update.
Edit a listed item: Open it, make your changes, and click Save. Updating a listed item's name does not require republishing the website. Check the live item page to confirm the change.
Unlist an item: Open the item, click the three dots (...) in the top-right corner of the item panel, and select Unlist. Unlist is also available at the bottom of the panel. The item's status changes to Draft, and its public item page is no longer available when reloaded. You do not need to save again or republish the website.
List a draft again: Open the draft and click List. Its status changes to Listed.
Duplicate an item: Open the item, click the three dots (...) in the top-right corner of the item panel, and select Duplicate. A Draft copy is created with Copy added to its name, whether the original is listed or a draft. Review the copied details, images and custom questions, make any changes, then click List when it is ready.
Delete an item: Open the item and click the trash icon at the top of the item panel.
View a digital file: Hover over the paperclip icon next to a digital download to View or Download the attached file.
