Each product or service you sell is an item. This article walks you through creating an item, adding its details and custom questions, publishing it to your website, and managing your items afterward.
Create a New Item
From your Durable dashboard, select Sell in the left sidebar.
Click + New item. It's in the top right, or in the center of the page if you have no items yet.
In What type of item do you want to create?, select the item type: Physical product, Made-to-order, Digital download, Service package, Membership fee, Pre-order for pickup, or Other.
(Optional) If you mostly sell one type, check the Set as default box under the list, for example Set 'Physical product' as default. That type is preselected next time.
Click Next.
Add Item Details
In the Item name field, enter the name of your item (e.g., "Custom-designed T-shirt", "E-book: Marketing Guide").
In the Description field, describe your item, or click Generate to have Durable write a description for you. To refine the text, highlight it and click Make Longer, Make Shorter, More casual, or More professional.
Enter the Price for your item (e.g., "$25.00", "$9.99").
(Optional) Choose a Category to group similar items, such as "Tools" or "Guides". Categories appear in the Categories column of your Items list, and you can change an item's category at any time by opening it.
To add images, click Add images and choose files, drag and drop them into the area, or use share link. You can add up to 10 images.
For a Digital download, click Upload file and choose the file your customers receive. After checkout, they get a secure download link on the order confirmation page and in their receipt email. Download links expire after 7 days.
To change the item type later, pick a different option from the Item type dropdown.
Set Up Shipping Rates
Shipping rates are managed globally in Shop settings. Buyers choose one at checkout when an order is delivered, and each rate is charged once per order.
From your Durable dashboard, select Sell in the left sidebar.
Click Shop settings in the top right.
Select Shipping rates, then click + Add shipping rate.
Enter a Name and Price for the option.
Enter the Earliest delivery and Latest delivery in business days.
Click Save.
Repeat these steps to offer more than one delivery speed or price. Use the pencil icon to edit an existing rate. To remove one, click the trash icon, then click Delete in the confirmation window. If you do not add a shipping rate, delivery is free by default.
Configure Delivery and Custom Questions
Under the Delivery section, choose how customers can receive their item. Customers see this option when they buy:
Shipping only: The item will be shipped to the customer.
Pickup only: Customers will pick up the item from your location.
Shipping or pickup: Offers both options to the customer.
For a Physical product or Made-to-order item, the Shipping rates section lists the rates configured for your shop. To add or change a rate, click the pencil icon beside Shipping rates; this opens the same global shipping-rate settings. Shipping rates do not appear for Digital download, Service package, Membership fee, Pre-order for pickup, or Other items.
If customers can pick up the item, including Pre-order for pickup items, check the Pickup address. Your Durable business address is used by default. To change it, click the pencil icon next to the address to open Choose pickup address, then select an address, click Edit to update one, or click + Add address to add another location. Click Done.
To add custom questions for your item, click + Add custom questions.
In the Custom question panel, enter the Question label (e.g., "Handle type", "Engraving text").
Select the Type of input for the answer:
One line: For short text answers.
Multiple lines: For longer text answers.
Dropdown: For a list of predefined choices (e.g., "Small", "Medium", "Large").
Checkboxes: For multiple selections (e.g., "Red", "Blue", "Green").
Radio buttons: For a single selection from a list (e.g., "Wood", "Plastic").
Date: For selecting a specific date.
For Dropdown, Checkboxes, or Radio buttons, enter each choice in a Custom label field under Options.
If the question requires an answer before purchase, turn on Required. Customers must answer it before they can add the item to their cart.
Click Save. The question appears under Custom questions in the item panel.
Repeat steps 3 to 8 to add more custom questions as needed.
Customers' answers appear in each order's details and in your new sale email.
Publish Your Item
Once you've entered all the details, click Save draft to save your progress without making the item live, or click Publish to make it available on your website.
The first time you publish an item, Add an items page to your website? appears. Click Add items page to create a page that displays all your published items, or Not now to skip. When the page is added, you'll see Items page added to your website.
To receive orders, enable payments. Click the Enable payments to receive orders banner on the Sell page, click Continue payment activation, and follow the steps. Until payments are active, customers see Checkout coming soon at checkout. For setup steps, see How to Enable Payments in Durable.
Changes to your website save in the editor. Publish your website to make them visible to visitors.
Manage Your Items
All your items are listed in the Items tab in Sell.
Edit an item: Click it in the list, make your changes, and click Save.
Unpublish an item: Open it and click Unpublish, or click the three dots (...) next to it in the list and select Unpublish listing. You can also switch an item between Published and Draft from the website editor. See Manage Your Online Storefront.
Duplicate an item: Click the three dots (...) next to it and select Duplicate. This is a quick way to create a similar item.
Delete an item: Click the three dots (...) next to it and select Delete, or open the item and click the trash icon.
View a digital file: Hover over the paperclip icon next to a digital download to View or Download the attached file.
Ideas to try
Offer a service with scheduling options: Create a "Service package" item for a "Consultation Call (30 min)". Add a custom question of type Date so customers can choose their preferred appointment date.
Sell a customizable physical product: List a "Personalized Mug". Include custom questions like a One line input for "Text to engrave" and Radio buttons for "Mug color" (e.g., "White", "Black", "Blue").
Sell a digital guide: Set up a "Digital download" for an "E-book: Business Plan Template" and upload the PDF your customers receive. Durable handles delivery for you.
Offer different versions quickly: Create one item, then use Duplicate to make versions with a different name, price, or images, such as a small and a large size.
Take pickup pre-orders: Create a "Pre-order for pickup" item like "Weekend Sourdough Loaf". Add a Date custom question so customers can choose their pickup day, and set the pickup address where they collect it.
